Sculptra® is an injectable product that contains microparticles of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a synthetic polymer from the alpha-hydroxy-acid family. When injected into the deeper skin tissues of the face, collagen is produced gradually over a period of time, resulting in a natural looking skin and facial rejuvenation.
Sculptra ® is intended for:
- Volume increase of depressed areas, particularly to correct skin depressions, such as skin creases, wrinkles, folds and for skin ageing
- Large volume restoration and/or correction of the signs of facial fat loss (lipoatrophy) including
HIV patients treated with antiretroviral drugs.
Age-related volume loss
Find out more
For many patients, wrinkles form the focus of their facial rejuvenation, without addressing the contour changes that result from fat redistribution and other structural alterations. Therefore, mastery of volume replacement is essential to the practice of facial rejuvenation. Learning more about where and how volume is lost, and where best to replace it in order to restore the natural contours of the face will enhance the ability to obtain natural looking results.
Volume loss in patients with HIV associated facial lipoatrophy
The physiological processes that lead to fat loss are analogous given that patients with HIV associated facial lipoatrophy do not present with the same pattern of fat loss as those with age related volume loss. For example, although both conditions typically present with fat loss in the nasolabial folds and cheeks, the volume loss and pattern is structurally different in each condition.
Prior to treatment
Before and after photos will be taken before the session commences and topical anaesthetic cream will be applied to make the procedure as comfortable as possible.
During treatment with Sculptra ® poly-L-lactic acid
Each treatment session will involve several small needle injections on each side of the face. Swelling or oedema will occur immediately following the injection session, which will create an improved appearance. Injection related swelling typically resolves within several hours to a few days, resulting in the temporary reappearance of the initial defect.
FAQ's
How is Sculptra administered?
Each treatment session will involve several small needle injections on each side of the face. Swelling or oedema will occur immediately following the injection session, which will create an improved appearance.
How many treatments are required?
Any increase in volume will be gradual and following each session results will become more noticeable. Multiple treatment sessions are typically necessary with Sculptra® to achieve optimal correction. With Sculptra® the treatment may be no shorter intervals than 6 weeks, which enables the body to respond and collagen production to be initiated. The number of treatment sessions required depends on the severity of the overall volume loss, individual response to treatment and the desires of the patient. You are required to massage your face vigorously twice a day between sessions to ensure good dispersal of the product throughout the treated areas. Not only does this encourage a smooth dispersal but it also reduces the likelihood of any little lumps and bumps occurring.
What results can I expect from Sculptra?
This treatment produces natural-looking effects, restoring the contours of your skin. Results may last up to two years, however, touch up treatments may be required in the future to maintain an optimal treatment effect.
Are there any side effects?
The most common side effects with the use of Sculptra®, as with many other dermal injectable products, include injection related side effects at the site of injection such as bleeding, tenderness or pain, redness, bruising or swelling. These effects generally resolve within 1-15 days post treatment.
